For centuries, tattoos have been used to adorn the bodies of people all around the world. In the Philippines, traditional tattoos have an especially long and rich history. Called “batok” in the indigenous Visayan language, these ancient tattoos were originally a form of tribal identification, as well as a way to honor a person’s ancestors. Today, these tattoos are still worn with pride and serve as a reminder of the centuries-old cultural heritage of the Filipino people.
